Artist Statement for the Territorial Statehouse painting
In 1851, Brigham Young and a group of lawmakers decided to make Fillmore the capitol of Utah Territory because of it’s central location.  The Statehouse was built between 1852 and 1855, but only the south wing of the proposed building was ever built.  In 1856, the Territorial Statehouse was abandoned in favor of a new location in Utah’s largest city, Salt Lake City.  Today, the Statehouse serves as a museum.
